A correct diagnosis of tuberculosis can be only stated by applying a medical test to patient's phlegm. The result of this test is obtained after a time period of about 45 days. The purpose of this study is to develop a data mining solution which makes diagnosis of tuberculosis as accurate as possible and helps deciding if it is reasonable to start tuberculosis treatment on suspected patients without waiting the exact medical test results. In this research, we compared the use of Bayesian Networks and Rough Sets to predict the existence of mycobacterium tuberculosis. 503 different patient records having 30 separate input parameters are obtained from a private clinic and used in the entire process of this research. The Bayesian Network model classifies the instances with RMSE of 22% whereas Rough Set algorithm does the same classification with RMSE of 37%. As a result, Bayesian Network is an accurate and reliable method when compared with Rough Set method for classification of tuberculosis patients. ©2010 IEEE. © 2010 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Semantic Web is a product of Web 2.0 (second generation of web) that is supported with automated semantic agents for processing user data to help the user on ease of use and personalization of services. Web Mining is an application of data mining which focuses on discovering patterns from Web logs and data. The semantic structure can be built with the pattern or relation results discovered via web mining. By combining those two applications of both disciplines, it's possible to achieve Semantic Web Mining which is a recent hot topic in educational research. This paper gives an overview of current applications of Semantic Web Mining on e-learning which already became a base component of education. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. (2010) Alparslan, Erdem; Karahoca, Dilek Yiğit; Karahoca, Adem; Uzunboylu, Hüseyin; Özçınar, Zehra; Alparslan, Erdem, Department of Software Engineering, Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi, Istanbul, Turkey, Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştirma Kurumu, Kavaklidere, Turkey; Karahoca, Dilek Yiğit, Department of Software Engineering, Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi, Istanbul, Turkey; Karahoca, Adem, Department of Software Engineering, Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi, Istanbul, Turkey; Uzunboylu, Hüseyin, Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology, Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi, Nicosia, Cyprus; Özçinar, Zehra, Ataturk Teacher Training, Nicosia, Cyprus
Computer Science (CS) education is more theoretical in earlier classes. After the first year of this theoretical education, the assignments and exams become more practical and applicable. The same situation keeps going in business life for CS and Information Technology (IT) areas. This will result the male outnumbering to the females in education and business life for CS relative areas. In this study, we try to discuss some inferences about this underrepresentation of females in such areas. The more practical nature of CS is held as a basis of statistical hypothesis and some statistical tests are performed on theoretical and practical overall grades of female and male students in Bahcesehir University. The results and findings are delivered with the final discussions. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. © 2010 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of web-based MS Power Point education on primary school students. Educational course material has been developed for web based learning environment. It has web based content of MS Power Point 2003 program. Also, quality of educational material is evaluated by taking into the account the ISO9241Usability of software standards. For this purpose, Xerox Usability Survey is conducted to the 83 primary school students. Statistical analysis shows that achievement of the students increased via the web based content. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. © 2010 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Advances in technology caused remarkable changes in educational area. Computers are now the major supplementary material for most of the courses. Conventional classrooms are now changing with modern classrooms where computer aided education is applied. This study focused on observing the difference of student success in computer aided education versus conventional education on programming module in Information Technologies course which is taught on tenth class of secondary education. For this research, two identical student groups each having 25 students are formed. Conventional methods are applied to the first group and computer aided methods are applied to the second group. The obtained results are evaluated by variance and ANOVA. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. © 2010 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

The aim of this study is to investigate interactive and web based simulation contents on education for students' achievement in Vocational and Technical Education. Research carried on 10th class students in Department of Information Technology at Technical High School. The study was created by utilizing pre-test and post-test model. Sample set consist of 12 test and 12 control subjects, in total 24, 10th class students. Students who enrolled Foundations of Information Technology course are provided to make virtual experiments on laboratory application in simulation environment with web based education. Same course is given in traditional teaching and laboratory work style to the control group students. Achievement tests that developed to measure success was used as pre-test and post-test. Interactive and web-based content of simulation education may be a solution to shortage of professional tools and space and shortage of teaching staff. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. An OOP w/ Java course using an inductive approach
(2010) Çakir, Duygu; Kaptan, Selvihan Nazli; Karahoca, Adem; Çakir, Duygu, Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi, Istanbul, Turkey; Kaptan, Selvihan Nazli, Department of Genetics and Bioinformatics, Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi, Istanbul, Turkey; Karahoca, Adem, Department of Computer Engineering, Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi, Istanbul, Turkey
In the first class of CE and SE departments, all of the students get a compulsory software language course. This paper indicates that using a procedural and inductive approach in teaching object oriented languages is far more better than using the object-first approach with regard to the experiences gained during 5 years of an introductive OOP Java course. Our supporting ideas are based on student feedbacks and their successes not just during their studentship but also in the industry. © 2011 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
