Abstract
BACKGROUND: In this research, a comparison was made between the results from a group of patients undertaking exercise using pressure biofeedback and a group of patients who undertook a normal exercise program as part of the process of returning to daily life following lumbar disc herniation surgery. As there is no standard exercise program after lumbar disc herniation surgeries, a standardized exercise protocol was developed. METHODS: The study was performed on 20 patients who had completed the two weeks of follow-up after lumbar disc herniation surgery and met the conditions for admission to the research program. Firstly, patients were randomly divided into two groups. A total of 15 sessions of physical therapy program were administered to the control and case group three times a week for a period of 5 weeks. RESULTS: The first evaluation was made on the 14th postoperative day for both groups. A normal exercise program was undertaken by the control group and a pressure biofeedback exercise program was undertaken by the case group. After 15 sessions, the evaluations were repeated and the treatments were terminated. Based on the data obtained, the pressure biofeedback and normal exercise program were compared as part of the process of returning to daily life. The effectiveness of the exercises was studied and assessed. There was no significant difference in the pre-treatment evaluations for both groups. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups after the treatment (P<0.05). When the control group was compared to the case group, the results for the case group were found to be statistically more significant (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The exercise program with pressure biofeedback produced more successful outcomes for the patients than the normal exercise program. By applying the exercise program with pressure biofeedback, patients are able to exercise properly. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
