ACCORDING TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM STAFF THE REASONS FOR VIOLENCE

Abstract

Objective: The main purpose of this study is to show the reasons for violence and the types of violence against health staff who work in emergency rooms and to raise awareness of protective and preventive precaution to be taken in this regard. Material and Method: This research is based on a descriptive survey model. The study group for this study consists of all health personnel working in the emergency room department of the hospital of Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty (doctors, nurses, emergency medicine technicians, security services, administrative services etc.). 121 medical staff working in the emergency department consented to participate in the study. Results: According to the results obtained in the study, 64% of the patients' relatives in the first place who commit violence towards health personnel, the rate of 33.3% with patients took the second place. Violence in the emergency department is mostly commited in shifts between 00:00-08:00 am. (40%), 52.1% of staff have been subjected to violence in the past, verbal violence is the most common with a rate of 52%, the second place was by physical violence and emotional violence took third place and sexual harassment was the fourth most common form of violence reported. Conclusion: The most common reasons for the emergence of violence in emergency rooms, according to emergency room personnel, impatient patients, communication problem between patients and health workers, long waiting times and lack of workers are the most important factors.
