It is very important to evaluate and reveal the valuable knowledge hidden in raw data. This is why data mining has become an inevitable and competitive tool especially in the banking and retail industries. The business way is executed in banking industry around the world has undergone a grand changes. Data mining tools that are contained several data mining techniques are being used by leading banks for customer segmentation, behavior, profitability, credit scoring, tracing payment balances, marketing new products and detecting fraudulent transactions..etc Therefore, data mining techniques conduce to optimize business decisions and increase the value of each customer information and improve customer satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to describe fundamental concepts of data mining that are existed in a standard data mining tool and explain why these major processes are extremely important for corporations in order to deal with large data sets effectively. Also it is planned to introduce well known techniques commonly used in data mining processes that have proven effective analyzing huge data sets that have ambiguous descriptions and conditions by producing profitable business decisions. Especially, the data mining methods commonly used in banking and retail industries are selected and explained in detail by performing literature review. In the last section, one of the methods among others is chose and is applied to customer data. Therefore, all major steps of the data mining are practiced in that data and tried to find proper business results. This research exposes clear understanding of data mining techniques and the essential steps of them. It is also present how these methods can be used by companies for which purposes and which goals by performing which processes.
