Item Investigation of smart polymers and their applications as biomaterials(Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2014-06) Aktaş, Gözde; Özdemir, HüseyinStimuli sensitive polymers can provide a variety of applications for the biomedical and bioengineering fields, such as delivery systems of therapeutic agents, tissue engineering scaffolds, cell culture supports, bioseparation devices, sensors or actuators systems. Temperature and pH sensitive mechanisms have been considerably investigated because they are relatively convenient and effective stimuli in many applications. This thesis was focused on the biomedical and bio-related applications of smart polymers. Temperature and pH sensitive polymer systems are investigated in detail. The other stimuli based sensitive polymers were also assessed. In the first part of the study, different types of stimuli sensitive polymers were described and classified. Novel and prominent applications were investigated and interpreted. In the second part, physical forms of stimuli sensitive polymers were elucidated, which is critical to design new approaches. Also, classification of stimuli sensitive polymers were described by their mechanism of response to stimuli.
