Abstract
Theorists like Dewey, Gessell, Piaget built various opinions about starting first grade for many years. While Dewey supported 6 ages to start school, Gessell emphasized the concept of maturation. While the concept of school readiness has started to emerge with Gessell’s idea, Piaget mentioned the importance of transition to concrete operational period. While discussions in today continue, the importance of school readiness, developmental areas and the factors affecting school readiness are also seen when the individual differences of children are considered. When the effects of school starting age and school readiness on children are seen, it is seen that these two concepts that concepts should be cared about starting first grade. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
