Abstract
The smartphone has become a most important personal electronic product and changed our daily lives. Television and multimedia content are being downloaded and watched on smartphones widely. The quality of perception (QoP) was examined in this study for differently encoded video presented on the iPhone. Well known encoding factors such as resolution, bit rate, and frame rate were selected and tested by conducting an experiment. The higher frame rate was assessed as the better but medium level frame rate also gave satisfactory QoP in some situations. Although larger resolution was evaluated as better, we found there is a peak for QoP. Up to a certain level of resolution, larger resolution gives a better result but after a certain level of resolution QoP deteriorated. The smartphone will be more popular in the future and cutting-edge technology will improve the handheld computer. More visual multimedia will be distributed online and played on smart devices more easily. This study can be used to assist to encode video for smart devices. © 2013 ICIC International. © 2013 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
