Abstract

Retail design is a relatively new area of research for architects and designers. As such, academic studies have considered the effects of various elements on retail design and customer experience to be significant. This article aims to explore the influences of atmospheric elements, such as color, lighting, materials, and sound, on the customer experience. The study findings indicate the importance of atmospheric elements in retail spaces. Moreover, the effects of atmospheric elements may vary depending on the store’s location or design. This article presents a study and a questionnaire that introduce an original case analyzing the effects of atmospheric elements in retail spaces located in Istanbul. Although the results are derived from retail spaces located in Istanbul, the study results can serve as a reference for the general characteristics of retail design. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
