Let the fog cloud dissipate: Offering clarity to educational leaders in a VUCA world

Abstract

This chapter aims to provide a framework for today's constantly changing environment known as VUCA. The acronym VUCA which stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, reflects an increasingly unstable and rapidly changing business world (Lawrence, 2013, p. 2). This unstable nature of the world has been transforming schools and educational leaders. Therefore, not surprisingly, trends and developments affect educational organizations and create a considerable need for qualified educational leaders. VUCA requires new sets of skills, practices, and attempts to overcome problems, thus, adaptation to VUCA world might be difficult for leaders with traditional leadership skills. First, leaders need to understand the challenges of the VUCA world and gain a new mindset to manage the organizations, and to navigate the complexities. That's why this chapter provides current information on highlighting the complexity and challenges of the VUCA environment, providing a deeper understanding about the new leadership skills, and enhancing VUCA readiness of educational leaders. We need this discussion to underline the importance of VUCA readiness of educational leaders since they need new skills, mindsets, and methods to drive growth, stay ahead of the curve, and lead their organizations to succeed. Within this main goal, which is to develop educational leaders for a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world, four themes (Understanding VUCA world, Challenges and Opportunities for Leaders in a VUCA World, How can Leaders Survive and Lead in a VUCA World, Learning Needs and Skills of Educational Leaders in a VUCA World) are discussed specifically with a holistic view including practical suggestions for educational leaders. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
