Abstract

In recent years, the increasing amount of municipal solid wastes (MSW) have become a major problem in metropolitan cities due to population growth, technological development, and industrialization. As countries' energy needs increase, it has become possible to convert from MSW into electrical energy. In this study, the group of paper, organic and other, called a plant or animal-based bio-waste, which can be used in energy production in MSW, has been examined for Istanbul, Turkey. This study aims to analyze the usage of bio-waste to generate electrical energy from municipal waste by considering economic, environmental, and energy generation perspectives. Because of this purpose, a multi-objective optimization problem is defined and solved by the weighted sum method. The optimal solution aims to maximize energy generation and minimize greenhouse gas emissions and operational and investment costs. In this regard, the implementation of two waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies, landfill and incineration, is investigated. During the analysis, it has been determined how much energy generation is achieved when the hybrid model is used compared to the landfill and incineration technologies separately.
