Abstract

New advances in (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) CMOS technology have led to an increase in the availability of cameras and microphones. Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) have gained attention after integration of this multimedia-enabled low-cost hardware into traditional sensors [6,12,31]. WMSNs are the next-generation WSNs, they are specially designed to retrieve and transmit multimedia data from wireless environments. They support various multimedia applications including multimedia surveillance networks, target classification, disaster prevention and environmental monitoring, and many more. A comprehensive survey of multimedia communication over WMSNs is presented in Refs. [5,36]. Real-time data transmission over the wireless medium has rigid quality-of-service (QoS) needs, several requirements based on multimedia applications are also given in Refs. [7,25]. Traditional sensor nodes are not suitable for multimedia applications due to their exhaustive requirements. Instead, various improved series of wireless sensor nodes such as Imote2 [26], TelosB motes [28], and MICAz [Crossbow technology, California, www.xbow.com] may be utilized for multimedia applications. © 2019 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
