Abstract
Objective: With that study we aimed to compare home exercises and video-based exercises regarding attention level and kinesiophobia. Material and Methods: The patients over 65 years who are living in Beşiktaş, district of İstanbul and who have physical therapy services in Beşiktaş. Sixteen participants were randomly assigned to 2 groups. The first group was recommended for home exercises by physiotherapist in line with the treatments video, the second group was recommended by the publication. Then, the Number Range Test (WMS-2) and the Mental Coordination Test (WMS-3) were used to evaluate the levels of caution in the patients in each of the two groups. Pain and movement fear evaluations were repeated after 15 days of exercise program. In addition, patients’ quality of life was also evaluated. Pain scores of the patients were measured before and after treatment with Visual Analog Scala (VAS), Exercise avoidance (fear) scores with the Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale, the quality of life was measured with short form (SF-36). The 15-day exercise frequency between the groups and its relationship with other parameters were compared. Results: The research was a cohort study and parametric tests were used and analyzed by normalization. The patients’ disease and education levels were heterogeneous and differences were present. Video exercises increased the frequency of exercise more than exercises prescribed on paper. Discussion: Low number of patients, heterogeneous patient population and lack of pain constitute the weaknesses of our study. In exercise applications, cognitive levels of elderly patients may affect the correct and complete exercise. Conclusions: Patients’ pain and fear of movement are reduced by exercise. However, the video exercises were superior than exercises prescribed on paper. In our study, the relationship between the patient’s attention level and the frequency of exercise were also investigated. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
