Abstract
Scar kills Mufasa, then, takes the throne and eliminates Simba. The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare has been adapted to many works, many times, in various media, such as a worldwide-known feature-length animation, The Lion King (Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, 1994) and a Turkish original series titled Hamlet (Kaan Müjdeci, 2021) on a Turkish SVODs called GAIN. This chapter focuses on the boundaries between appropriation and adaptation ways of Kaan Müjdeci in Hamlet (2021). In the original series, Hamlet is represented as a female character called Hazar. The series is based on the idea that what if Hamlet [Hazar] lives in 2020s' Turkey, where she attempts to take revenge from her uncle, then, along with her family, she participates in a crime-based reality program called Justice with Nagehan Tan. The fictional crime-based reality program in the series is portrayed as a kind of an appropriation of one of the most long-standing and popular crime-based reality programs in Turkey: Müge Anli ile Tatli Sert (2008-). The fictional program's host strives to solve the mystery behind the murder of Hazar's father, which is centered on an island. Significantly, this chapter proposes to illustrate a seminal work's transformation from the literature to a Turkish digital streaming service. Afterward, the narrative structure of the original series Hamlet (2021) is discussed. Crucially, the formats of the fictional crime-based reality program Justice with Nagehan Tan, and Müge Anli ile Tatli Sert (2008-) are compared. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
