Abstract
In this chapter, we set off to explore how artificial intelligence can be integrated into educational assessment, with a particular focus on its practical implications for teachers. Through the lens of artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, we zoom into how artificial intelligence driven assessment methodologies could (re)shape traditional practices. Then, our discussion moves to the transformative potential of AI-based assessment, particularly in shifting from summative to formative approaches that promote on-going student engagement and progress monitoring. The chapter also touches upon the tensions surrounding AI's role education. In the subsequent parts of the chapter, our focus is centered on practical implications of AI-based tools laying a particular focus on principles of reliability, validity, and practicality. In so doing, this chapter also explores artificial intelligence's ability to generate assessment materials and provide personalized feedback on students' work. The chapter concludes by discussing the importance of teachers engaging with AI tools effectively. By adopting innovative teaching and learning practices integrating AI, we argue that AI empower teachers and students alike in diverse educational settings. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
