Abstract
This paper introduces a comprehensive taxonomy to optimize visual perception and enhance navigational cues in video games. This taxonomy categorizes key elements such as materials, color and contrast, size and scale, lighting and shadow, motion and proportion. It also aims to provide game designers with a structured approach to understanding and using visual perception elements in games properly. The taxonomy is expected to yield valuable insights that inform game design practices, enhance player engagement, and improve navigation efficiency. This research aims to guide game designers in utilizing visual perception elements, ultimately contributing to the development of more immersive and engaging game environments. The developed taxonomy is intended for future research purposes, with the anticipation of its expansion, refinement, and updating. Moreover, the elements within the taxonomy can be tested through controlled gameplay experiments to validate their effectiveness. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
